The Recystance is a mutual aid organization focused on the hidradenitis suppurativa community. This means we are volunteer and community led to our core. All walks of life are included in our vision. HS does not discriminate between gender, race, or class, so neither do we. Our current goal is to create accessible, virtual support groups for those living with the condition.
What is mutual aid?
Mutual aid is a rehashing of one of the oldest human traditions: helping one another and organizing our joint survival. It's the organizational part that’s been the hiccup. Historically, good-intentioned hierarchies have permitted some to thrive while others suffer. In these systems, certain voices, shaped by the privileges they’ve enjoyed, carry more weight. So, mutual aid is radical for both enabling us to return to our roots of simple peer interchange and rise against the status quo imposed by big institutions. Keeping it simple, centering equity, and excluding pyramidal management are the golden rules of mutual aid.
Before we continue, a quick note on accessibility: plain text versions of all documents are available. A facilitator (little ol’Teal being the only one right now) can be made available to help explain the program for anyone struggling with the walls of text.
